The game is played with a regular deck of 52 cards. After the cards are shuffled, 21 cards are dealt face up in a pyramid pattern - 3 cards at the bottom, 4 cards above that, 5 cards above that, and so on until all 21 cards are dealt. The goal is to remove all of the cards from the pyramid.

Cards of the same rank as the card at the base of the pyramid can be removed. For example, if the 3 of clubs is at the base of the pyramid, both the 3 of spades and 3 of hearts can be removed since they are both of the same rank. A king can also be used to remove any other king from the pyramid.

Cards that are not matched with another card in the pyramid can be placed in one of two piles - either build up one pile or down another pile. When building up a pile, start with an Ace and build up by adding suits in order (clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades). When building down a pile, start with a king and build down by adding suits in reverse order (spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs). When either one of these piles reaches Kings Row (4 piles), then it is turned over and becomes a draw pile. The game is won when either both draw piles are empty OR all 21 cards have been removed from the pyramid.

After that it just takes some practice and maybe a little luck :) As far as strategy goes...it really varies depending on which version of Pyramid Pays you are playing. How to play Pyramid Pays like a pro!

In Pyramid Pays, you are dealt cards face down in a stack, and the bottom card is turned over to start the discard pile. The player to the dealer's left starts the game by playing a card. The suit of the card played (clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades) determines the "trick."

If the first card played is not a Pyramid card, the player must either play a Pyramid card from their hand or draw one from the deck and play it. If they cannot play any Pyramid cards, they must pick up all the cards in the Trick and end their turn.

When playing a Pyramid card, if it matches either of the two Pyramid cards previously played in the Trick (regardless of order), you capture those Pyramids by placing them face down in front of you. If there are no other Pyramids in play when you play your card, then you must capture one or more cards from the discard pile - unless doing so would cause you to exceed 10 cards (see below). If you cannot capture any cards, then your card is added to the discard pile. When playing a Joker, see Joker rules below.

After playing (or picking up) a card on your turn,the turn passes to the left. Continue playing until there are no more cards in any player's hand. The player with most captures wins that Trick and takes another turn. In case of a tie for most captures, both players keep theirPyramids and another Trick is played. The game continues until all Tricks have been played and there is only one winner who collects all capturedPyramids.

There are three ways to win at Pyramid Pays - by capturing allPyramids in one trick (called a "snap"), by reaching 10 cards without capturing anyPyramids ("knocking"), or by winning all four Tricks.
